After your Christmas tree has fulfilled its holiday duty, don’t disgrace it by sending it to the landfill; help your tree find its way back home through composting.

It’s the time of year when we wrap our gifts to the nines. It’s hard to imagine a gift without concealing it in lavish paper and shimmery accents. While ribbons, bows, and festive wrapping paper make for a beautiful gift, the waste they produce is overwhelming. The good news: There are lots of alternatives!

We generate three times as much food waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s as we do the rest of the year. Working on limiting the food we purchase and cook, eating leftovers, and composting as many scraps as possible can limit waste during the holiday season.

Today is Veteran’s Day and we wanted to give a big thanks to all those that have served in our country’s military.

Our Eco-business highlight of the month is also one of our longest customers. Imagine Nation Brewing has made an impressive effort even through the pandemic to divert organic waste from the local landfill. We had the opportunity meet brew guru Sean, who walked us through the brew-to-bin process. Every new batch of beers will have a yeast byproduct that instead of being wasted in the trash, is being saved in green bins and hauled to add into a nutrient rich compost.

In the natural world, nothing goes to waste. Plants and animals may die and decay, but the nutrients are reused to support regrowth and new life. In the human world, this is not always the case. The cycle is stopped when our waste is combined and sequestered into a landfill. Even in our beautiful city of Missoula, it is estimated that yard and food waste alone make up 28% of material in the landfill.
