Our Mission
Missoula Compost’s mission is to help Missoula reduce local waste by offering simple waste management solutions that are accessible to all Missoula’s businesses, residents, and events. In support of Missoula’s Zero by Fifty plan, we plan on strengthening our community through composting practices, altruistic people, and rich soil.
The Vision
-
We operate transparently, promising all organic collections will always end up composted. You will never see a Missoula Compost truck at the landfill. Any problem our customers have is a problem of ours and we are eager to address issues with flexible solutions. We prove to Missoula how simple and effective composting can be at reducing waste.
We are working hard to create an effective composting service. The more composting is normalized and the community joins in the more accessible and affordable we can make it for everyone. We are working within our own company, with other businesses, and working with Missoula City to accomplish this goal.
-
Missoula Compost aims to make organic waste management easy for everyone, with timely support and consistent pick up times. Whether you’re a big business or live in an apartment, we can work with you to find the right compost bin and frequency of pick-up. At events we help with compost set up, consulting, and breakdown to make composting as convenient as possible.
Curbside composting requires little space and time, is quick to set up, and fast to start making a real change in everyday waste production. Missoula Compost operates under flat rates, and no hidden fees, all of which contribute to overall convenience and affordability.
-
We want to show Missoula how composting can rescue resources, build soil, reduce emissions produced by orgaincs in the landfill, and slow the growth of encroaching landfills.
Missoula Compost is using curbside composting as a simple and modern way to reduce and reuse everyday organic waste.
-
Missoula Compost is a local family owned business. We collect locally, compost locally, and reintorduce compost soil to Missoula. All our collections are composted at Missoula’s industrial compost facility, collections never go more than 10 miles from your pick up location. The organics are then spread back into the local environment for stronger growth and better stability.
Supporting Missoula Compost guarantees supporting the local environment and local economy.
-
Missoula Compost was created in efforts to help Missoula along the Zero Waste Goal that was adopted by Missoula City Council. We are working to achieve goals laid out in this sustainability plan one step at a time. By partnering with local businesses and nonprofits we are looking to transform Missoula’s waste management practices for a more sustainable city. The more composting is normalized in Missoula, the more accessible and affordable we can make it for everyone.
We want to prove to Missoula how composting can not only effectively reduce waste, but add future value by rescuing resources, building and strengthening local soil, and slowing the growth of encroaching landfills.
Our Results
-
Approximately 9% of the total carbon emissions in our city come from solid waste. In a landfill, organics break down into methane (a strong greenhouse gas) which is released into the atmosphere and plays a key role in climate change.
When organic waste is composted, oxygen is introduced into the decomposition cycle. This allows the production of carbon dioxide instead of methane, which has has a much lower impact on global warming.
-
By composting our organic waste, we recover nutrients that would otherwise go to the landfill. Composting retains those nutrients in an enriched product available to all Missoulians, free of petroleum-based compounds and pesticides that are found in many fertilizers. Compost can be added to soil to loosen clay, allow water penetration, and improve water retention. Gardens that use compost produce higher yields of healthy fruits, vegetables and flowers and contain more nutrients. The scraps you give us will ultimately be used to enrich the soil in our community.
-
The current Missoula landfill is due to fill up by 2035 and more of the North Hills will become consumed as we fill up the current site.
As of 2016, Missoula’s landfill receives an estimated 210,000 tons of waste per year. Currently, Missoulians only divert 22% of waste from the landfill, far lower than the national average of 35%. We want to help our community become a little more conscientious about waste.

Composting is a shared mission: saving the planet, one banana peel at a time. It's like a mini eco-revolution right in your neighborhood.

We create a space – online and offline – for Missoulians to talk about compost.
Share stories, ask for advice, and laugh about your composting adventures.
