We have all heard of Earth Day. We remember it being celebrated in schools and around town. Volunteer opportunities pop up and we are expected to put on an orange vest to collect garbage along the highway, rivers, and streets. Sometimes it feels a bit meaningless watching as cars spew gasses, light pollution dampens our stars, and  plastics fill our rivers and oceans. It's hard to imagine we can make a difference.

That’s only because it is so easy to forget how bad off we used to be. In 1970 environmental pollution was blatantly in full force. Air pollution was rampant, linking to disease and deaths in large cities. Factories exhaled black smoke and pumped oil and toxic chemicals into waterways. Pollution became so bad Clevland’s Cuyahoga River spontaneously combusted!

One of the most noteworthy statements, by Denis Hayes, Earth Day founder, made it clear that Earth Day was a beginning: "If the environment is a fad, it's going to be our last fad...We are building a movement, a movement with a broad base, a movement which transcends traditional political boundaries. It is a movement that values people more than technology, people more than political boundaries, people more than profit."

So here we are today, continuing this movement, giving it momentum each year through speeches, workshops, and events.
