Support Sustainability in Missoula

Missoula has seen a population spike in recent years. We need to adapt to protect our lands as the population inevitably continues to grow. Wildlands, animal populations, and trail systems will be affected by increased traffic, pollutants, and poor waste management strategies that create loss of habitats, food sources, and quality soil.

How we meet the challenge of sustainable development now will determine our future. Strong city planning and support from everyone in our community will be essential in managing these challenges effectively.

Here at Missoula Compost we are dedicated to building soil, not landfills. We believe the landfill should be the last option for any waste disposal, not the first. Any material we can prevent from piling up in our valleys is a good deed done. There are many ways you can contribute to the community we love as our population grows.

Ways you can help support our community's sustainable efforts:

  1. Home ReSource is in need of volunteers for the Green Team!

    • Duties for Green Team Volunteers include:

      • Monitoring & sorting waste stations during zero waste community events.

      • Keeping waste stations clean.

      • Educate event attendees about waste separation – “Is this compostable / recyclable?”

2. Become a Compost Advocate

Missoula Compost is starting a program to work with avid composters in the community. We hope to provide resources to individuals to share as well as create conversation and compile unique ideas to support Missoula's composting efforts. First matter of business will be coming up with a group name!

If you wish to join and share ideas please email lara@missoulacompost.com

3. Join a signature gathering team

A proposed Missoula Plastics Ordinance in effect would ban plastic shopping bags & polystyrene products and require food vendors to provide straws/stirrers only on request. Check out our Press Release to learn more. If the initiative moves forward, you would help get a suggested ban of single-use plastics on the ballot.

4. Volunteer at Missoula County Public Schools

Missoula schools are teaching kids how and what to compost. With limited staff, they need support to help kids sort their lunch waste as they make their way to the different bins.

See you out there!
