2023 Annual Report
The Problem
When organic material is sent to the landfill it is forced to decompose without appropriate oxygen resulting in the production of methane. Organics hold invaluable nutrients that are spoiled among other waste materials. By practicing a one bin waste system, we increase the growth rate of our landfill and compromise valuable local land. An estimated 210,000 tons of waste is sent to the Missoula landfill every year.
The current Missoula landfill is due to fill up by 2035. This will cause more valuable land in the North Hills to be consumed by waste. Currently, we divert less than 20% of waste from the landfill. By just composting we can reduce at least 58,800 tons of organics. Diverting another 28% from the landfill will result in 48% of our resources being rescued, renewed, and reused.
Our Mission
Missoula Compost’s mission is to help Missoula reduce local waste by modernizing compost practices, according to the city’s Zero by Fifty Plan, making composting accessible to all Missoula’s businesses and residents through curbside composting.
Our Impact
Missoula Compost collected over 3 million pounds of organic waste in 2023. This material was then processed into usable nutrient rich soil.
We use Terrence and his big brother Clarence, diesel trucks, to collect organics. Over the course of the year, we burned 4,906 gallons of diesel fuel, producing 110,388 pounds CO2. Our organic collections reduced 106,281,611.4 pounds of CO2 from local landfill productions.
By using a diesel truck, we off-set our positive impact by only 0.1%; not perfect but a valiant effort.
Awards
“Missoula Compost Collection is nominated for 2023 Business of the Year for enabling sustainable Downtown events by facilitating easy composting of food and beverage waste. Founded by entrepreneur Sean Doty, this local business not only influences event practices but also contributes to the growing trend of compost disposal in restaurants and downtown establishments.”

Our Contributions
We are working on partnering with Soil Cycle to increase compost education opportunities in the community.
We support Home ReSource’s mission to reduce waste and build a more vibrant and sustainable local economy. Through donations in 2023, we have helped fund Home ReSource’s Green Team. The Green Team will work at public events to help educate the public and sort waste into the the correct waste streams to help reduce contamination.
Thanks to You!
We are thankful for all the support we have from the community. Without you, we could not make the impact we have. Our success is Missoula’s success. We have had the honor of serving 1,100 residential cumstomers and 106 local businesses. Everyone who composts makes a great positive impact in our community and sets a new standard for success.
